Bring Your Own Chair

Bring Your Own Chair – Forecast, Thomastown, Co.Kilkenny

As part of Forecast| curated by Hollie Kearns and Rosie Lynch, and responding to the theme gather, Bring your own Chair was a participative event that explored the potential of public spaces for gathering and sharing space. The people of Thomastown were invited to witness a jam session between musicians, observing their demonstration of cooperation, while they themselves become part of that cooperation. Through the gesture of bringing their own chair the audience engage in a collective action, exploring the potential in the public spaces of Thomastown for gathering and sharing space. Using a number of locations in the centre of the town and exploring a variety of seating formations, this works looks to investigate how the design or layout of public space can impact the way we come together.

Forecast| was a project that took place in County Kilkenny that asks us to look anew at the future of our rural towns. Exploring our common landscape and built environment, five thematic projects led by artists and architects took place in Callan, Castlecomer, Graiguenamanagh, Mooncoin and Thomastown. The distinct projects each responded to a specific theme: Move in Callan, Explore in Castlecomer, Protect in Graiguenamanagh, Play in Mooncoin and Gather in Thomastown and were led by visual artists’ Sarah Lincoln, Seoidin O’Sullivan|, Michelle Browne and and London based architects Studio Weave|.
